This book is set in India. My fascination with India doesn’t come close to the one with China that I mentioned before, but it exists nonetheless. I think it started with the Rohinton Mistry books that I discovered about 6 years ago. I mean, how you can you not be fascinated with a country with such a complex history, such a merge of cultures and religions that has somehow blended into one country with a distinct identity. (Not that I ever want to go there, the thought of the germs scares the ^%$ out of me and I’m not normally a germ freak, not to mention all the other stuff that goes on).
The book deals with the complexities of religion in India and the political instability becomes a story about individuals. I loved the book at the start but I got a bit bored with the complexity of the story and I lost my empathy with the main character as the story went on. Basically, its an ok book but I wouldn’t say anyone HAS to read it …. it does have some interesting comments to make on religion in India and gives a perspective on living in that culture which is perhaps not unique, but worthy of being reminded of.
